Fiji -Kiribati Summit Diplomacy
On 28th January 2025 , The President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, received a courtesy call from the President of the Republic of Kiribati, His Excellency Taneti Maamau, at the State House
On behalf of the Government and people of Fiji, President Lalabalavu extended a warm welcome to President Maamau and his delegation, who are in Fiji for a three-day State Visit.
The visit underscores the enduring friendship and shared values between the two Pacific Island nations.
President Lalabalavu expressed his gratitude for the strong bilateral ties that Fiji and Kiribati have maintained over the years. He also thanked the President for his wisdom and generosity in accepting the visit to Kiribati by the Prime Minister of Fiji Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka made in January 2023, to invite Kiribati to rejoin the Pacific Islands Forum.
During their discussion, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama reflected that Fiji is a second home for some of the people of Kiribati, reflecting the spirit of solidarity and mutual respect that defines their relationship, including the people of Banaba or Ocean Island who have made their home on Rabi Island in Cakaudrove Province, his home Province and who enjoy dual citizenship for both Kiribati and Fiji.
Fiji and Kiribati enjoy a long history of diplomatic relations, collaborating closely in areas such as climate change, sustainable development, and regional security. Both nations are committed to addressing shared challenges, particularly the existential threat posed by rising sea levels and the need for greater regional resilience.
President Maamau’s visit serves to further strengthen the cooperation between the two countries, fostering deeper dialogue and joint efforts to promote the well-being of their citizens and the broader Pacific region.
